Description
Pink Halite from Searles Lake California.
The chemical formula for Halite is NaCl. It is a natural form of salt.
Searles Lake is an endorheic dry lake in the Searles Valley of the Mojave Desert, in northwestern San Bernardino County, California. An endorheic lake is a drainage basin which does not drain into other external bodies of water. The water level is maintained through evaporation. Since it does not drain, but rather evaporates, the Lake has a very high concentration of salt.
Halite is a seasonal mineral. During the rainy season the Halite melts back into the lake and during the dry season the Halite crystals form. At the end of the dry season in October the crystals are collected.
In recent years Halite has been very difficult to obtain. In 2019 the collecting site was closed due to an earth quake and in 2020 and 2021 the site was closed due to covid restrictions. It is not yet know if the collecting will resume in 2022 or not.
The Pink Halite offered here is from the 2016 Dealer Dig. Like a good wine, Halite also has its good and bad years. It is said that 2016 was the best year for Halite in the past 15 years.
